The University of Tennessee College of Law Center for Advocacy & Dispute Resolution will host Chief Justice Janice M. Holder of the Tennessee Supreme Court Wednesday, Sept. 3, beginning at 12:10 p.m. in Room 132. Please note the early starting time. Chief Justice Holder is Tennessee's first female Chief Justice and has been a member of the Tennessee Supreme Court since 1996. Before being appointed to the Court, she served as a Circuit Court Judge for the Thirtieth Judicial District, Shelby County, Tennessee.
The Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial Law and the UT Corporate Governance Center will sponsor a lecture by Marco Ventoruzzo on European and Italian corporate governance Friday, Sept. 12, from 12:20 until 1:10 p.m. in Room 136. Prof. Ventoruzzo is an Associate Professor of Corporate Law at Bocconi University - Institute of Comparative Law in Milan, Italy. He has also been an International Visiting Professor at Louisiana State University Law School where he taught Comparative Corporate Law. He received a Master of Law degree from Yale University and has taken graduate courses at the Michigan Law School. The title of his lecture is “European Corporate Governance and the EU Takeover Directive.”
Congratulations to the following 3L students who have been selected to serve as student members of Knoxville’s Hamilton Burnett Chapter of the American Inns of Court: Amber Becton, Jonathan Buckner, Alicia Cottrell, Stacy Eckard, Kenlyn Foster-Spence, Brittany Gardner, Adrienne Gilliam, Anna Gracey, Nicholas Jackson, Maryam Kassaee, April Knight, Shelton Swafford, David Veazey, and Alyssa Youngerberg. The Inns of Court is a national organization "designed to improve the skills, professionalism and ethics of the bench and bar." As described on the Web site for the American Inns of Court (http://www.innsofcourt.org/), the Inns of Court consist of judges, lawyers, law professors, and law students. The Inns typically meet once a month during the academic year to hold programs and discussions on matters relevant to law and legal practice.
The Federalist Society will hold its first event of the semester on Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. in Room 132. Tuan Samahon, professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Law School, will make a presentation titled “The New Politics of Judicial Selection: What a President McCain or Obama Can Expect When Appointing.”
FACULTY
Profs. Jennifer Hendricks and Robert Blitt have been invited by Washington University to participate in its prestigious junior faculty works-in-progress program this academic year. Prof. Hendricks will discuss the Supreme Court's recent Erie cases and preclusion on Dec. 5. Prof Blitt will discuss the International Religious Freedom Act on Feb. 6, 2009. The workshops bring together a cross-section of junior scholars with a wide range of backgrounds and interests to provide helpful commentary on each other’s work.
Prof. Iris Goodwin will be a panelist at a roundtable discussion Sept. 8 in Washington, DC, titled “Maximizing the Use of Endowment Funds and Making Higher Education More Affordable.” The roundtable is being convened by Senator Chuck Grassley and Congressman Peter Welch. The roundtable will explore the relationship between endowment value and college cost, the legal and accounting definitions of what an endowment is, and the impact of legislation requiring a mandatory payout from endowment funds. Prof. Goodwin is among the panelists who will discuss “What is an Endowment?”
