Master of Trial Skills Jeff Sherr to Speak
A theatre major turned lawyer who now designs trial training programs will present this semester's first Skills Series lecture. Jeff Sherr, Education and Strategic Planning Manager for the Department of Public Advocacy in Frankfort, Ky., will speak at the College of Law at noon on Sept. 1 in Room 237. Sherr specializes in helping young lawyers develop story-telling skills which enhance their trial presentations. He has designed and led leadership education for the Kentucky public defender offices and has created week-long litigation institutions which have trained more than 100 lawyers. Sherr graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law where he was a member of the National Moot Court team. He also teaches at the National Criminal Defense College, the Clarence Darrow Death Penalty College and the Southern Public Defender Training Center. All members of the law school community are invited to attend.
Tennessee's newest Chief Justice to speak at College of Law on Sept. 2
This Thursday, Sept. 2, one day after being sworn in as Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, Justice Cornelia Clark will speak at the College of Law. All members of the law school community are encouraged to attend to welcome the new Chief Justice. The lecture will be in Room 132 at noon.
Justice Clark will be the second Tennessee Chief Justice to speak at the College of Law the day following her swearing-in ceremony. Chief Justice Janice Holder also addressed the law school community the day following her swearing-in ceremony. Justice Clark has been a member of the Supreme Court since September 2005.
Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Clark served as director of the Administrative Office of the Courts (1999-2005); as Circuit Court Judge for the 21st Judicial District (1989-1999); and as an attorney with Farris, Warfield & Kanaday, now Stites & Harbison. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, her master of arts in teaching from Harvard University and her juris doctor from Vanderbity University School of Law. Before attending law school, Justice Clark taught high school history and government for four years.
Justice Clark was recently named Appellate Judge of the Year by the Southeastern Chapters of the American Board of Trial Advocates. She was previously recognized by the Williamson County Bar Association with its inaugural Liberty Bell Award for promoting a better understanding for the rule of law and encouraging civic responsibility.

Jostens class rings representative here on Sept. 9
Jostens will be sending representatives to the College of Law on Sept. 9 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. to promote the official ring program.
They will be stationed in the Howard Baker Rotunda.
Student writing contest
The Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia and the Washington College of Law are sponsoring a legal essay writing competition. The entries should focus on the status and future of women’s bodily freedom in American policy-making and jurisprudence. MORE

From Greg Stein, Associate Dean for Faculty Development
Last week, the College of Law hosted its first Supreme Court Week. Faculty members participated in three luncheon roundtables at which small groups of faculty members gave presentations on recent Supreme Court cases. In this way, the members of the faculty were able to help keep each other up to date on the latest developments in their respective fields. Presenters included Professors Barton, Cornett, Heminway, Hirsch, Kuney, Long, Pulsinelli, Rivkin, Stein, Stephens and White.
Professor Greg Stein’s article, “Commercial Leasing Law in China: An Overview,” has been published in the Cornell Real Estate Review. MORE
Professor Jennifer Hendricks was quoted in an article in the Knoxville News-Sentinel about the proposed Islamic Center to be built in Lower Manhattan. MORE

Director Karen Britton appointed NALP nominating chair
The National Association for Law Placement (NALP) appointed Karen Britton, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid and The Bettye B. Lewis Career Center, as chair of its 2010-11 Nominating Committee. NALP is the association of legal career professionals and its members include all ABA accredited law schools and over 1,100 private and public sector legal employers in the United States and Canada. Britton is a former NALP President. NALP's nominating committee solicits nominations from the membership, interviews nominees, slates the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the association and manages the election of regional officers and nominating committee members.
