Energy Regulatory Judge speaks Thursday
Chief Judge Curtis L. Wagner, Jr. of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will speak at the College of Law Thursday, Oct. 23, from 5 until 6:30 p.m. in Room 135 and also Friday, Oct. 24, from 12:20 until 1:10 p.m. in Room 262. His topic will be “The Independent Regulatory Agency & the Role of the Administrative Law Judge.” MORE
Mediation Moot Court team chosen
Ashley White and Brian Clifford will represent the UT College of Law in the 2008-2009 ABA Representation in Mediation Moot Court competition. ” I want to thank everyone who participated in the try outs; you all were amazing, and I wish that we could field multiple teams,” said the team’s coach, Prof. Becky Jacobs.
Wagner Labor and Employment Moot Court team chosen
The members of this year’s Wagner National Labor and Employment Law Moot Court Team are Katie Dodd, Dan Duran, and Betsy Fussell. The competition will be held at the New York Law School in March 2009. Prof. Jeff Hirsch and Brad Morgan coach the team.
Retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to speak at Baker Center Opening
The Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy will celebrate the opening of its new facility Oct. 31 with the help of retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Events include a dedication ceremony, a public lecture and an open house. MORE
Halloween pet costume competition Oct. 26
On Sunday, Oct. 26, the UT Pro Bono Animal Law Project and Law Women will host their annual Pet Halloween Costume Contest at Victor Ashe Dog Park (4901 Bradshaw Road) at 3 p.m. Contestants should arrive at 2:30 p.m. for registration. The entry fee is $10 with all net proceeds going to the Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley, Knoxville's no-kill animal welfare organization. Prizes are being donated by: River Dog Bakery, Doggone Pretty, Paws Pet Supply, Petsafe Village, Mast General Store, Broadway Dog Salon, Pups and Pals, Rita's Bakery, The Glowing Body, Everything Mushrooms, Bliss, Pet Supplies Plus (Kingston Pike), and Magpies. Profs. Kuney, Lloyd have second edition published
Thomson-West has published the second edition of Contracts: Transactions and Litigation by Profs. George Kuney and Bob Lloyd. The second edition continues the authors’ approach of explaining applicable legal standards and rules in the introduction of each chapter, presenting cases to illustrate their application, and including problems to reinforce students application and analysis skills.
Prof. Heminway lectures in Italy
Prof. Joan Heminway wrote a chapter in a recently released international book published by Taylor & Francis, Insider Trading: Global Developments and Analysis, edited by Paul Ali & Greg N. Gregoriou. Her chapter is entitled “Martha Stewart: Insider Trader?” In addition, Prof. Heminway lectured on “The Peculiar Nature of Insider Trading Doctrine in the United States” at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy, Oct. 9 and offered a research forum on the same topic for The University of Tennessee Corporate Governance Center Oct. 17.

Proofreader needed
Prof. George Kuney is seeking a student research assistant for a short term proof reading project involving a personal property secured transactions text that is going to press shortly. The manuscript is approximately 500 pages long and needs a last proofing by a set of trained, fresh eyes possessed by someone with keen attention to detail. Time frame: due by the end of October or possibly the first week of November. If interested, send Prof. Kuney an e-mail letting him know that you are interested and detailing any qualifications that bear on the project and the selection process.
Student writing competition in securities law
The Association of Securities and Exchange Commission Alumni (ASECA) is sponsoring a student writing competition for papers in the field of securities law. Cash prizes of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 will be awarded for first-place, second-place, and third-place entries. Submissions must be received by ASECA by Nov. 15, 2008 to be eligible. Alcohol awareness topic of national writing competition
The Center for Alcohol Policy has launched a national essay contest in an effort to foster debate, analysis and examination on the importance of the 21st Amendment, which repealed Prohibition and established the modern state-based alcohol regulatory system. MORE
