Race Against Racism
Dean Doug Blaze was the torchbearer for the YWCA's annual Race Against Racism Saturday, Jan. 15. The event included a 5K run and one-mile walk through east Knoxville to raise awareness about the racism that still exists in our communities. Several UT law students and alumni also participated, as well as assistant dean Katrice Morgan.

Penny White to deliver Centripetals lecture Jan. 25
Professor Penny White will speak on "Money, Sex, and Special Interests: A Crisis of Confidence in Today's Courts" at the University Studies Centripetals luncheon Tuesday, Jan. 25, from noon until 1:30 p.m. in the University Center executive dining room. White, who has been a judge at every level of the Tennessee court system, will discuss how the sustainability of the courts as legitimate government institutions is affected by judges' involvement in inappropriate liaisons with individuals, campaign contributors and special interests.

Professor Penny White served as a faculty member for the Trial Advocacy Workshop at Harvard Law School from January 2 - 9. The workshop is Harvard's trial practice class in which second- and third- year law students are taught trial practice skills by visiting lawyers, judges and law professors. White has taught as a member of the TAW since 1998.

Professor Greg Stein's article, "Private and Public Construction in Modern China," has just been published in the San Diego International Law Journal. Read MORE.

Professor Becky Jacobs is the co-author of a chapter on "Ecosystem Management" in Volume 3 of the 10-volume "Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability."Read MORE.

Student research assistant sought
Professor George Kuney is seeking a law review-trained, detail-oriented student for a research assistant position relating to finalizing the manuscript of a case/text book on business reorganizations. This represents an opportunity to be paid to read closely about this very timely subject. Student research assistant sought
The Center for Entrepreneurial Law is seeking a research assistant to work primarily with Visiting Professor Christyne Vachon in the field of international business law, including the formation and regulation of capital markets in the former Soviet republics.  Interested students should submit a resume and e-mail expressing interest to Vachon at cvachon@utk.edu.

Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice essay contest
Entries are being accepted for the 2010 Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice essay contest, formerly known as the Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law essay contest. The intent-to-submit deadline is Jan. 31. MORE

Bankruptcy writing competition
The Bankruptcy Litigation Committee of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the country’s premier trade association of the insolvency and restructuring community, invites students to participate in its third annual ABI Bankruptcy Law Student Writing Competition. First through third place recognition, which include a cash prize, publication opportunities and ABI membership for a year, will be awarded.  Professor George Kuney will work with any students interested in developing and writing a paper for this competition. Chapter 13 writing competition
The National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees is sponsoring a writing competition for law students which features a $1,000 first prize, as well as registration and boarding at the group's annual conference and seminar in August. The topic of the essay, article or comment can be on any issue concerning Chapter 13 of the bankruptcy code and may not exceed 15 pages of double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman text. The winning submission will be eligible for publication in the association’s quarterly membership publication, which reaches Chapter 13 Trustees and bankruptcy judges nationwide. Professor George Kuney will meet with interested students to assist in developing a topic and to provide feedback as part of a “supervised writing project” as permitted by the competition’s rules. Competitions of this sort are often undersubscribed by quality entries and, thus, may represent fruitful opportunities for committed entrants. The deadline is April 30. MORE

Animal humane rights writing competition
The Committee on Animals and the Law of the New York State Bar Association announces its fourth annual student writing competition. The deadline for submission is June 30. MORE
