A close shave

Prof. Ben Barton (seated top photo) was true to his word last Thursday as he allowed Profs. Joan Heminway and Carl Pierce to sculpt his curly locks into a Mohawk in front of interested onlookers in the Commons. Prof. Barton offered to sit for the trim as an item during the Allen Novak Auction April 16. Profs. Heminway and Pierce were the winning bidders and were accorded the tonsorial honors last week.


The 2008-2009 National Moot Court Team is Kevin Hartley (1L), James Inman (2L), and Beth Wilson (1L).

The Dean and Dean's Staff Advisory Committee invite you to join in UT College of Law's "For Pets Sake" Drive, contributing items for the care of pets awaiting adoption at the Knox County Young-Williams Animal Shelter (http://www.knoxpets.org/). Priority items being collected for the For Pets Sake Drive: Towels (bath size, new or used); Blankets (new or used); Sturdy Dog Toys (Kongs and other durable chew toys); Plastic Watering Cans (to fill water bowls); Peanut Butter Soft Dog Treats (for training); Nylon Scrubbies (for washing dishes); Brooms; Dust Pans; Postage Stamps; Rubbing Alcohol; Distilled Water; Paper Towels; Kleenex; and Huge (Great Dane sized) dog crates. Monetary donations will also be accepted. The Business Office (Law Suite 265) will be the For Pets Sake Donation Location all throughout the month of April and May. Please join us in helping Young-Williams Animal Center to help our community.

FACULTY

Prof. Glenn Reynolds has written a chapter entitled "Rethinking Privacy" for a book entitled Rebooting Democracy: Reforms for the 21st Century, to be published by the Personal Democracy Forum. In addition, he will be writing about the Supreme Court's upcoming decision in Heller v. District of Columbia for a special symposium edition of the Ohio State Law Journal.

Justice Scalia discussed several aspects of Prof. Tom Davies' 1999 Michigan Law Review article, "Recovering the Original Fourth Amendment," in the recent decision in Moore v. Virginia, an arrest case.

The ICFAI Journal of Banking Law, published by the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts in Hyderabad, India, has invited Prof. Greg Stein to republish one of his articles about Chinese real estate law. The article, “Mortgage Law in China: Comparing Theory and Practice,” which recently appeared in the Missouri Law Review, will be published in an upcoming issue of the Indian journal.

Prof. Tom Plank has been selected for nomination as Vice Chairman of the Secured Transactions Subcommittee of the Uniform Commercial Code Committee of the ABA Business Law Section to serve a three-year term beginning in August 2008. Prof. Plank has been selected to present his proposed article, "The Mortgage Market, Securitization and The Bankruptcy Code: A Proposal For Reform," at the Joint Program of the Section on Creditors’ and Debtors’ Rights and the Section on Real Estate Transactions, "Real Estate Transactions In Troubled Times," at the January 2009 annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools.

Profs. Carol Parker, Becky Jacobs, and Judy Cornett will present a panel on "Ethics and Professionalism in Legal Writing: Blawgs, Briefs, and Professional Identity" at the Thirteenth Biennial Conference of the Legal Writing Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana, in July.
