ANNOUNCEMENTS

James Van Nostrand, the Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial Law’s Visiting Professor of Corporate Governance and Investor Rights, is departing the College of Law at the end of classes this semester. He has very much enjoyed interacting with the College of Law’s students, staff, and faculty during his time here teaching Business Associations and Energy Law. While here, he has been working to finalize his article "Constitutional Limitations on the Ability of States to Rehabilitate Their Failed Electric Restructuring Plans," which is slated to be published in the spring of 2008 by Seattle University Law Review. He has also been working on assembling cases and materials on Energy and Environmental Policy. In both endeavors, he has been assisted by and thanks research assistants Holly Mancl, Will Kittrell, and Scott Childs. While here, Van Nostrand was named the 2007 State Regulatory Practitioner of the Year by the Energy Bar Association and was presented with the Award at the EBA's Mid-Year Meeting on Nov. 29 in Washington, DC. Van Nostrand, a partner in the Northwast’s Perkins Coie LLP, will return to Portland, Oregon, for the month of December and then travel to The University of Iowa College of Law where he will be serving as a Visiting Professor for the spring semester, teaching Administrative Law and Energy Law & Regulated Industries.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR STUDENT AND STAFF AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED AT THE COLLEGE OF LAW'S ANNUAL HONORS BANQUET ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2008

The College of Law will hold its annual Honors Banquet and Awards Program Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 at The Foundry on the World's Fair Site. The evening will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. and the presentation of awards. The College will present several awards in recognition of scholastic performance, including the presentation of certificates to students who earned top honors in law classes taught during the 2006-2007 academic year, as well as awards which recognize exceptional achievement and outstanding service.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit nominations for the student and staff awards listed below. Additional information and nomination forms will be distributed in all student, faculty and staff mailboxes. Nominations should be submitted to either the Student Records Office (Suite 166) or the Dean's Office (Suite 278) by Thursday, Dec. 20. Please be sure to provide supportive information on each nominee, to ensure that he/she will receive full consideration.

You are welcome to duplicate any of the forms if you have multiple nominations, or you may print additional copies of the forms, which are posted on the web as PDF files and linked below:

FACULTY

Prof. Glenn Reynolds had three papers in the Social Science Research Network's top ten list last week. His "Guns and Gay Sex: Some Notes on Firearms, the Second Amendment, and 'Reasonable Regulation'" (forthcoming in the Tennessee Law Review) was number one; his "Looking Ahead: October Term, 2007" (published in the Cato Supreme Court Review) was number 3; and his "Is Dick Cheney Unconstitutional?" (published in the Northwestern University Law Review) was number 10.

Prof. Alex Long’s article “Retaliatory Discharge and the Ethical Rules Governing Attorneys” will be published in an upcoming issue of the University of Colorado Law Review.

STUDENTS

The Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial Law is seeking expressions of interest from students wishing to be Center Research Associates during the Summer of 2008. Duties include research and writing on business and business law related topics in a structured environment. Work product will include briefs, transactional documents, teaching materials, books, and articles. Time sheets required. The positions offer an opportunity to explore how law is actually practiced in a business law firm environment as well as the practical, micro-level details of business litigation and transactions. If you are interested, please supply Prof. George Kuney with your resume and an expression of interest in the form of a letter explaining your relevant qualifications, prior accomplishments, and reasons for being interested in the position. Selections will be made early in the '08 Spring Semester.
