ANNOUNCEMENTS
Prof. Jerry Black was honored Nov. 15 with the B. Rex McGee Award for the Pursuit of Legal Excellence at the Eighth Annual Awards Luncheon hosted by members of the Knox County bench and bar. The award is given to a member of the legal profession who exemplifies the traits of the late Rex McGee, including maintaining excellence in legal scholarship, practicing the profession with civility, devoting time to mentoring young lawyers, and maintaining respect and empathy for individuals brought within the justice system.
The Dean and Dean's Staff Advisory Committee invite the law school community to join in the Colleges Clean Start Drive by contributing items for distribution to Knox Area Rescue Ministries shelter and recovery residents. Items being collected for the Clean Start Drive include travel- or trial-size toiletries such as soaps, toothpaste, shampoo, and grooming items such as combs, toothbrushes, washcloths, and towels. The Business Office (Law Suite 265) will be the Clean Start Donation Location throughout the month of November. Please join us in helping Knox Area Rescue Ministries to help our community.
The Student Bar Association is hosting a Final Exam Dinner for all students, faculty, and staff in the Baker Rotunda beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4.
The UT Office of Equity and Diversity Experience has scheduled its workshops for Fall 2007. The schedule may be found here.
FACULTY
Prof. Robert Blitt recently traveled to New York to represent the American Bar Association at a meeting for non-governmental organizations chaired by H.E. Dr. Srgjan Kerim, President of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting included presentations by the Chairpersons of the UN's Main Committee bodies on the work agenda and priorities of the 62nd Session of the General Assembly and set a new precedent for NGO interactions at the UN. Also, Prof. Blitt's 2003 article “Who Will Watch the Watchdogs? Human Rights, Nongovernmental Organizations and the Case for Regulation” has been reprinted in the current issue of the International Journal of Civil Society Law (Volume V Issue IV), available here.
In December, Prof. Don Leatherman will submit an article to be placed in the December issue of TAXES about asymmetric transactions, following up the presentation he made at the University of Chicago Federal Tax Institute Nov. 9. In addition, Prof. Leatherman’s article “The Proposed Unified Loss Disallowance Rules” will be forthcoming in Tax Strategies for Corporate Acquisitions, Dispositions, Spin-Offs, Joint Ventures, Financings, Reorganizations and Restructurings 2007 (Practicing Law Institute 2007). Nov. 16 he spoke at the Practicing Law Institute's Los Angeles meeting on Mergers, Acquisitions, and Joint Ventures on a panel discussing current developments for consolidated groups. Over the past few months, Prof. Leatheman has also spoken as follows: November '07 at the University of Chicago Federal Tax Institute, participating on a panel discussing asymmetric acquisitions; at the American Bar Association tax section's October '07 meeting, moderating a panel on the history of the consolidated return regulations; and at the May ABA tax section meeting, moderating a panel discussing the proposed unified loss disallowance rules and current developments for consolidated groups.
STUDENTS
The Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial Law is seeking expressions of interest from students wishing to be Center Research Associates during the Summer of 2008. Duties include research and writing on business and business law related topics in a structured environment. Work product will include briefs, transactional documents, teaching materials, books, and articles. Time sheets required. The positions offer an opportunity to explore how law is actually practiced in a business law firm environment as well as the practical, micro-level details of business litigation and transactions. If you are interested, please supply Prof. George Kuney with your resume and an expression of interest in the form of a letter explaining your relevant qualifications, prior accomplishments, and reasons for being interested in the position. Selections will be made early in the '08 Spring Semester.
