Services for Bench and Bar

Ask a Law Librarian

Our law librarians and reference assistants are typically available from 9 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, 9 AM to 5 PM on Friday, and on Sunday afternoons. Contact the reference desk at 865-974-3771 or one of our reference librarians, Katherine Marsh at kmarsh@utk.edu, Sibyl Marshall at smarshal@utk.edu or Nathan Preuss at npreuss@utk.edu. We can assist you with locating and using materials in the library, finding particular documents, designing research strategies, and with answering brief, factual reference questions (examples: What is Judge Smith’s telephone number? What date did the Governor sign 2006 Public Chapter 103?). We cannot perform legal research on your behalf. If you are interested in hiring a law student to work as a research assistant, please call the College’s Career Services department at 865-974-4348 or use this online position listing form:

Circulation Privileges

Tennessee attorneys may request circulation privileges at our library. In order to set up an account, visit the library during normal business hours (8 AM – 5 PM Monday through Friday) and bring photo identification and your bar card.

Computers and Online Legal Research

The library has nine computers that may be used for online, Internet-based research. Also available on these computers is access to many subscription research databases that the library purchases, including Westlaw. Printing costs ten cents per page. In order to print, you must have one of our print/copy cards, available from the black vending machine behind the gold record display case near the Circulation Desk. This vending machine takes paper money only – no coins, credit cards, or debit cards.

Copiers

Document Delivery

The Law Library provides document delivery services to attorneys and judges. If you have a citation to a particular document (such as a case, statute, or article) that you need, please contact a reference librarian to determine whether we have the document and, if so, whether and how we can deliver the document. We typically do not charge for emailing documents that we already have readily available online. We do charge for documents that must be scanned, copied, printed, and/or faxed – contact a reference librarian to determine the charges for your requested document. You will be requested to provide a business billing address and we will invoice you later.

PACER – Federal Court Dockets and Documents Access

The library is currently participating in a pilot program offering free access to PACER, the electronic court docket system for the federal courts. Dockets are available from federal courts across the country, and some full-text filed documents are also available. To access PACER, you must have a reference librarian log you in to our account, so you may want to call ahead to the Reference Desk (865-974-3771) to be sure that someone will be available to assist you. While access to PACER is free, printing your search results does cost ten cents per page. In order to print, you must have one of our print/copy cards, available from the black vending machine behind the gold record display case near the Circulation Desk. This vending machine takes paper money only – no coins, credit cards, or debit cards. Our computers are not set up to save your research to an external drive such as a flash drive, so you will need to print your results.

Presentations

Our reference librarians, all of whom have degrees in law and library science and are skilled in teaching and presenting, are available for continuing legal education seminars or guest speaking at your group or association meeting in East Tennessee. Contact Nathan Preuss at 865-974-6736 to discuss scheduling a presentation.
