For more than sixty years, the College of Law's Legal Clinics have provided law students with opportunities to learn by doing—representing clients and helping resolve legal disputes. Our Legal Clinics celebrated their 60th Anniversary in 2007 with a two-day symposium and a celebratory dinner. Our Advocacy Clinic is the longest continuously operating for-credit Clinic in the country and remains one of the most successful programs of its kind. In 2008 U.S. News and World Reports ranked our Clinical Program 16th nationally among the more than 180 clinical programs considered, and first in the Southeast.
We currently offer a bevy of clinical opportunities. The Advocacy Clinic offers students the opportunity to represent real clients in criminal and civil matters. The Business Law Clinic allows students to represent non-profit corporations and start up businesses. The Mediation Clinic grants students the opportunity to train and act as mediators in actual court cases and disputes. The Judicial, Prosecutorial, and Public Defender Externships let students work in actual law offices or judicial chambers. In our Environmental Law Clinic students work with local governments and non-profits on water rights issues throughout East Tennessee. The Domestic Violence Clinic assists victims of domestic violence in orders of protection and other matters.
In all, we are extremely proud of the breadth and excellence of our clinical programs. University of Tennessee's status as a long-time leader in clinical legal education speaks volumes about the importance we place on teaching students how to practice law, as well as our commitment to public service and the community.
