Employment Opportunities
While in law school, there are a variety of opportunities for students to learn about and meet legal recruiters who hire summer and year-round clerks, and fill postgraduate attorney positions. These include:
* interviewing on-campus
in the fall and spring semesters;
* interviewing at off-campus job fairs;
* replying to posted job listings;
* conducting targeted mail campaigns;
* accepting temporary, single-project assignments;
* consulting legal web sites and print publications;
* and volunteering with employers not typically funded for clerking positions.
However, most opportunities will probably come from networking - making personal contacts and knocking on doors. In fact, statistics show that at least 80 percent of all jobs are filled this way.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Except in cases of financial necessity, students are discouraged from accepting positions during the first year of law school. In addition, American Bar Association policy states that students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week during a school semester.
