Admissions Decisions

Admission to the University of Tennessee College of Law is competitive. The College uses a “holistic” file review approach, considering each candidate’s potential contribution to the learning environment and the College of Law community.

Timetable for Filing Application for Admission

The e-application for admission may be filed as early as September 1 for consideration for the class that begins the following August. While the priority deadline for applications is February 15, applications may be filed throughout the year.

Timetable for Decisions

The Admissions Committee begins to review applications as soon as they become complete. Decisions are usually made by mid March. Applicants are notified as soon as possible after the decision is made.

Accepting or Declining Offers

Admitted candidates will be asked to accept or decline the offer in writing within a reasonable period of time. Two nonrefundable deposits are required. Candidates are encouraged to act responsibly in managing offers of admission, realizing that seats are coveted by other students at the schools to which you are accepted.

Waiting List

Since the target class size is small (150 students is ideal), the College keeps a waiting list of talented candidates each year. Candidates are encouraged to reaffirm their interest as the admission process continues. Several seats in the class are usuallyfilled from the waiting list each year.

Check the Status of Your Application

You may check your status online through the LSAC web site by clicking Check Applicant Status. Feel free to contact the admissions office if you have questions by email (lawadmit@utk.edu) or call (865) 974-4131.

Communication About Your File

Due to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, information about the status of your application file should only be shared with you, the applicant. If you expect to be out of the country or unavailable during the application process, it is advisable to designate a parent or spouse to deal with the admission staff on your behalf. Please send a signed letter to the Admissions Office authorizing and naming your designee.

Foreign-Educated Applicants

Foreign-Educated Applicants must submit foreign transcripts through the LSAC JD Credential Assembly Service. If postsecondary work was completed outside the U.S. (including its territories) or Canada, you must use this service for evaluation of the transcripts. The one exception to this requirement is if you completed the foreign work through a study abroad, consortium, or exchange program sponsored by a U.S. or Canadian institution, and the work is clearly indicated as such on the home campus transcript. If we determine that you need to submit a TOEFL score, you must contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and request that your TOEFL score be sent to LSAC. LSAC’s TOEFL score for the JD Credential Assembly Service is 0058. Questions and directions for registering for the service can be directed to 215.968.1001, or LSACINFO @LSAC.org.
