The Application File
Components of Your Application File
The following items are required to complete your Application File. Files will not be evaluated until they are complete.
Electronic Admissions Application
UT's electronic application for admission and instructions are available through the Law School Admission Council. Accuracy and completeness is critical. Months may elapse between the filing of the electronic application and enrollment in law school, and applicants are required to update the application form if information that they have certified as correct changes during the admission process.
Application Fee
A nonrefundable $15.00 application fee can be submitted through the LSAC electronic service or by check, money order or credit card (Visa, Master Card, or Discover) to the College of Law.
Two Writing Samples
Both a Personal Statement and an Essay are required and will be reviewed for content and form. Please do not exceed 500 words for each writing sample.
- The Personal Statement allows you to present personal background information, motivation for the study of law, and description of how you plan to contribute to the legal profession.
- The Essay should discuss an important learning experience in the past 10 years.
The CAS (Credential Assembly Service) Report
This report will be ordered when you apply for admission and will be updated as academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and writing samples are added. For more information about the required CAS Report, go to www.lsac.org.
Two Recommendations
The required recommendations must be submitted through the LSAC Credential Assembly Service. Please choose recommenders who have known you long enough and well enough to make a sound evaluation of your abilities. You may ask your recommenders to complete an online evaluation using the LSAC Evaluation Service, or to submit a letter of recommendation using the LSAC Letter of Recommendation Service. Your two required recommendations may be in the form of all evaluations, all letters, or one of each.
