Careers in Pro Bono and Public Interest Law:
Lawyers interested in devoting their careers to public interest
law are faced with a variety of opportunities. Public interest lawyers
may represent low-income individuals while working for private firms
or for non-profit organizations supported with public or private
funds. Some work for local, state or federal government agencies.
They may represent or help to direct non-profit groups. Many develop
a private practice built on representing clients whose cases they
believe will help bring about a more fair and accessible justice
system. Others are involved in helping to organize individuals and
community groups. Working on a range of legal and law-related issues
and from a variety of social and political perspectives, public
interest lawyers function as advocates, counselors, planners, organizers,
collaborators, and educators, helping their clients and communities
secure or protect civil rights, civil liberties, community well-being
and social justice.
The UT College of Law Career
